Dentist Danbury

If you need a cavity filling in the Danbury, Connecticut area, you’ve come to the right place!

Dental fillings restore a tooth affected by cavities or decay. We can repair teeth damaged by decay through minimally invasive procedures – and prevent further damage (and more intensive restorations) down the road. A common dental procedure, fillings can quickly and easily get your smile back on track.

Most patients eventually require dental fillings. Food and bacteria trapped in teeth can cause cavities. The sooner these cavities are caught and filled, the better outcome you’ll experience.

Here’s what you can expect when you visit our office for a dental filling:

Most cavity detection happens during dental check-ups. First, we’ll recommend a filling for the tooth. We detect most cavities via X-ray, but we may see issues during the exam in cases of severe decay.

When you come in for your filling, we’ll begin by administering local anesthesia. The anesthesia numbs your mouth, so you experience minimal discomfort as we fill the cavity.

Once the anesthesia has taken effect, we’ll remove the decayed part of the tooth with specialized equipment. We’ll clean the area of debris and bacteria and ensure it’s ready for a filling.

Following the preparation of the tooth, we apply the filling. Tooth-colored fillings are applied in layers. A special light is used to harden each layer. Once the layers have dried, we’ll remove any excess filling material from the tooth and polish the filling to match your natural tooth.

Once the filling is placed, you can resume your regular activities. Some patients need the anesthetic to wear off before eating and drinking again, but this should only last a few hours after the procedure.

What kind of fillings are available?

Silver amalgam fillings are the traditional solution for filling cavities. These create strong fillings that can withstand extreme force. Silver fillings are often used in the back of the mouth where teeth are less visible and chew with more pressure.

Ceramic-composite fillings are newer to the dental scene but are an outstanding option for many patients. These fillings are excellent for filling cavities on highly visible tooth surfaces. Colored to mimic a natural tooth, composite fillings are virtually undetectable and will not impact the overall look of a smile. While not quite as strong as a silver filling, ceramic composite fillings can often be placed on back teeth – depending on the severity of the tooth decay.

How long will my fillings last?

As with all dental work, the exact time frame depends on your oral care routines.

Once a filling is placed, it’s critical to continue regular dental check-ups to ensure fillings are working correctly and don’t show signs of wear. Silver amalgam fillings are the strongest option and last approximately 5-25 years. Composite fillings, on the other hand, last around 5-15 years.
